Sound characteristics of the mics used to capture the guitar cabs

Shure SM57 dynamic, on axis --> proximity effect (which means: emphasis on lower frequencies) and aggressive upper mids

Shure SM57 dynamic, off axis --> the off-axis position tames the aggressive upper mids of this mic

Sennheiser MD 409 dynamic --> sort of a mix of the SM57 and R121 with a grainer texture

Sennheiser MD 421 dynamic --> edgier upper mids for cutting through the mix

Coles 4038 Ribbon --> Old school ribbon with a remarkable proximity effect. Its highs often need to be boosted, or it can blended with a brighter mic

Royer 121 Ribbon --> “Natural” unhyped upper mids and BIG proximity effect gives it the feel of listening to a guitar cab, in the room, with laid back highs

Neumann U67 Condenser --> Extended lows, sweet mid-range and smooth high-end

Neumann U87 Condenser --> mid-range focus, with a nice blend of smoothness and detail
